Panola College and the Marshall-Harrison County Literacy Council hosted a recognition ceremony on Wednesday morning for one of our newest United States citizens, Galena Kirkland.
Recently, Kirkland was sworn in as a United States citizen following intense work learning the English language, passing civics exams and passing an interview process.
“After Galena would come here (Panola College’s Marshall Campus) on Monday and Wednesday, Galena came to Marshall-Harrison County Literacy Council on Tuesday and Thursday for additional tutoring. She was dedicated. She very seldom missed; if she missed, it was because of an illness. She always came with a smile,” said Karen Bickerdike, Executive Director of the Marshall-Harrison County Literacy Council. “She is to be commended. She set a goal, and she intended to reach that goal. She didn’t offer a lot of excuses, and she did whatever it took.”
Kirkland’s teachers from Panola College and her tutor from the literacy council, as well as her husband and family, were all present at the celebration.
